SIBELIUS AUDIO

OK, so how do you put audio from Sibelius into your blog?  Here are the steps you take:

1. Export as an audio file.
2. Upload to Google Drive (drive.google.com)
3. Google Drive won't be able to understand the file, but that's ok.  Click on it anyhow, then click the SHARE button in the upper right.  Another window will pop up - there are two things you need here.
  1. Click CHANGE and choose the option "anyone with the link can view."
  2. Copy the "link to share"
4. Go back to your blog.  Create a new blog post.  Click LINK, and paste the link you just copied.
5. Of course, title your blog and describe your piece.
"Tuplet Insanity" was just my little test on how to make triplets and more using Sibelius.  Most of the harmonies are in thirds, and I've used rather difficult rhythms that would be difficult to perform.  It's not a finished piece.

First Week Examples

Remember to try to stick to the rules that the "Get Ready" assignments from the Inside Music Website.  Here's an example of a piece that stuck to the rules very well:

The odd thing is that G either isn't the home tone, or we aren't in G major.

The following piece doesn't follow directions exactly, but sounds very good, in large part due to the use of motives:

Also, remember this:
1) When you submit your work and write a description, really try to describe what you've done.  Use full sentences, not just phrases or a single word. Also, in your description you should answer the "reflect" questions on the "get ready".  You don't have to answer the questions when submitting "create" assignments, because you'll have to do that on the blog page.
2) When doing a "create" assignment you should be thinking of it as a full-fledged composition.  Maybe it's short, but think of it as something you could use.  See my "create" assignment:

3)Finally, change the tempo. Make every tempo different. Out of all the assignments to which I've listened, only one of them wasn't qtr=120 !!

Inside Music First Assignment

In composing music we have to be brave.  We have to share our music.  What's the point in composing if no one else ever hears it?  That's part of the reason I wanted us to use these blogs.  When I was first introduced to the INSIDE MUSIC website, I did several of the assignments, including the very first one:

To embed it on this blog, I copied the "embed code" from the Noteflight page, on the "share" tab.  Then, as I was composing this blog post I hit the "HTML" button and pasted it here.  Then I went back to the "COMPOSE" button and did the required reflection by answering the questions:

As I went back and sang the melody along with the playback, it definitely works but I don't think I followed the directions exactly.  It does end on the home tone, though.

Here's one of my own compositions, one that wasn't any sort of assignment.

BLOG!

Welcome to the Applied Music Theory class!

Your first in-class assignment is to create a composition blog.  Using these blogs we'll be able to easily hear and comment on each others' pieces, plus you can write responses to the Inside Music "Get Ready" exercises and summarize your compositions.

Go to http://www.blogger.com to get set up.  It will walk you through the process, and I can help if you need it.  Blogger is owned by Google, which is associated with your .ncsuvt school email account, so use that.  If you haven't ever used that account, I can help you get it set up.  Please call your blog something that makes sense to this class, such as "Jack's Compositions" or "Music by Jill."  There's no need to use your last name.

This is something that you can personalize.  Make it your own!  You will be accessing this blog a lot for assignments, so you may want a link to it somewhere (http://ncuhscomposition.blogspot.com)
