ASSIGNMENTS

Group A

  • Take a musical idea and reverse or rearrange
  • Given a harmonic progression students will create a melody to complement it.  Ideas are given for changing the harmony block chords to add rhythmic interest. 
  • Transpose an existing piece
  • Re-score a piece you composed
  • Write a piece for jazz band
  • Lennon/McCartney assignment - write with a partner

Group B

  • Write a two or three-part canon
  • Write a game show theme
  • Write a duet for two similar instruments
  • Given a text, write a song for voice and accompaniment
  • Given a text, write a song for two voices
  • Write for a small, regular ensemble
    • string quartet, brass ensemble, woodwind ensemble, percussion ensemble, etc.

Group C

  • Given a text, write a song for four voice-parts
  • Given a text, write a song for voice and ensemble accompaniment
  • Write a song for voices using nonsense sounds
  • Write a duet for two very unlike instruments, such as
    • flute/tuba
    • bass drum/trumpet
    • timpani/clarinet
  • Write a piece for an unfamiliar instrument
    • chapman stick
    • ukulele
    • bagpipes
    • harp
    • classical guitar
  • Write for an irregular ensemble
    • our class
    • 2 flutes, guitar, timpani
    • clarinet, piano, bass, temple blocks
    • sax, violin, ukulele
